Winter

We have winter sessions at the field house.  Most Saturday mornings between November and April,  you can bring your bike to the field house to ride around the track between 6:30 - 8:30 AM.  You will need a STAC membership and STCI membership to participate in this program.  STAC memberships are purchased on STAC's website.  Purchase your STCI membership and register for the cycling at active.com.

We ask our members to kindly adhere to the following cycling etiquette:

  • Mountain bikes are preferred and road bikes are acceptable.  If you are going to use your tri bike, the use of aerobars is prohibited due to the lack of control while in the aero position.  While you may think you have control, the speeds reached and number of cyclists on the track just make this too dangerous.
  • We bike counter clockwise from 6:30-7:30 AM, then clockwise from 7:30-8:30 AM
  • The inner lanes are for slower riders and the outer lanes for the fast guys and gals.
  • Lane 1 is available for anyone who wants to run while we're cycling.  Runners should run in the opposite direction the cyclists are riding.
  • Lane 6, the outmost lane, is used for fast riders and passing.  ALWAYS pass in the outer lanes, not the inner lanes.
  • If someone is approaching from the behind, allow him/her to pass on the outside.
  • Always be aware of riders around you; the speeds are fast and the track is short.
  • BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!!!
We have limited capacity so register early to avoid disappointment!!  If you have any questions about this, email the Bike Director, Garry.
You can also check out programs offered by Bruce's Cycle Works.

Summer

We have informal rides, normally Saturday mornings.  You can also check our facebook page or bulletin board where people will arrange rides at short notice.

Road Trip in Italy!

fooGlenn got an email from Gord Litster in Victoria:

My name is Gord Litster and I am a member of the TriStrars Training, a triathalon/cycling club and Sidney Velos a road bike club, both in Victoria, BC.  I have a terrific offer for members of your Tri Club to cycle Italy with us in 2012.  Our Roadies Tour will include one of the local Gran Fondos, The City of Teramo Gran Fondo  (http://www.granfondoudaceteramo.it/home.html ).  Our guests have found it an amazing experience to ride in one of these events.

My wife Anita (from this area) and I are hosting the tour in the hidden jewel of Italy, the province of Abruzzo. Our itineraries extend from the stunning Apennine Mountains, in the west, to the beautiful Adriatic Beaches in the east and north to the Marches and Umbria borders.  This tour is designed to give the cyclist some great riding on country roads, with few cars, while taking in some spectacular scenery . Your home base is Valle San Giovanni, a village with a population of about 400. Olive groves, vineyards, sunflowers and picturesque hills of patchwork crops surround the village, typical of old Italy. Bread arrives daily and fish is delivered on Thursday. Amenities include a small grocery (great deli), fruit and vegetable store, post office, hardware store, hairdresser and Italian style bar. Daily life is evident and interactions with the locals are unavoidable. Beautiful countryside and friendly locals await you. This is a genuine Italian experience!  Check out our website for more info.  www.valletours.com

BCWFrom Andrea, via the STCI Bulletin Board:

The BCW cycling club is organizing the "17 Weeks to Spring" Winter Training Program, now entering its 7th year!

This coached program is conducted on wind trainers at at the Field House. You have the option of participating in one or two sessions a week. Sessions are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings (6:30-8:00 pm), from mid-November through mid-March.

A typical session includes a warm up, intervals, cool down, then core and stretching. Also included are two or three weekend information sessions (e.g. on nutrition, stretching or strength training, etc.) to add more tools to your training tool kit.

These sessions are great for all levels of expertise - beginner to advanced - and all age ranges - high school to retired and everything in between.
