WHAT’S NEW this year and few important reminders:
Race distances are based on kid’s age at the end of the year (by year of birth).
Race course orientation will be held on Thursday June 24th or Friday June 25th from 5:00 to 5:45 p.m. You must sign up, if you plan on attending. If your kid is unsure of what to do on race day, please attend this session.
Look out for “Ask Me” TriKids that will be there to help answer questions about the race course, or point out someone that can help, during registration.
Please remind your kid to bike safely and courteously. They must bike on the right hand side of the trail except when passing. They MUST let others pass on the left hand side of the trail, and they MUST NOT block others from passing.
If your teen is registered in the Youth Provincial Qualifier competitive event, he/she must attend orientation session – date and time to be announced.

CAN YOU HELP OUT? We need 80 volunteers to make this event safe and fun. Any help will be appreciated. Call Nan at 249-0506 or e-mail nanlee2004@hotmail.com Thanks!!

BEFORE THE START OF THE RACE

RACE SITE PARKING and ACCESS: The park access off Spadina will be closed to traffic from 9:45 a.m. till all the participants are off the bike course (about 12:00 p.m.). NO EXCEPTIONS. Avenue H access will be open for two way traffic during this period. If you plan on leaving the race site before the end of the race, park south of the transition area (by Avenue H exit and NOT by the tennis courts).

CHECK-IN and TRANSITION AREAS OPEN
at 9:15 a.m. Check-in by age group for body marking (that’s how TriKids wear their race numbers), receive race numbers, and pick up T-shirt and pool party tickets. Please arrive on time because you will need time to check-in, check out the course, set up your tri-stuff, and put on race numbers. Registration closes promptly at 9:45 a.m.

TRANSITION: There are two transition areas. POOL transition area is where you will leave towels (bring two), running shoes, clothes that you will be wearing, and a bike helmet. The transition area will be designated by age. Set up your bike in the BIKE/RUN transition area on racks set up for each age group. An area has been set aside for smaller kids to lay their bikes down on the grass (7 and under). Keep transition areas tidy so that other kids don’t trip over your things. Use lockers in the pool change rooms for things that you won’t be using during the race. PARENTS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED IN THE TRANSITION AREA DURING THE RACE.

DURING THE RACE

BE ON DECK on time and report to Pool transition coordinator (Cheryl). The start times will be posted in the pool transition and check-in areas on race day. Race instructions will be given out, and swimmers will be seeded into (designated to) swim lanes. Race will start promptly ON TIME at 10:00 a.m.

SWIM: Try not to swim backstrokes - too many kids end up bumping into each other! One lap (50 m) is two lengths (there and back). If you think you may need a flutter board, let Swim Coordinator know (Wendy) before you start.

SWIM to BIKE TRANSITION: Boys must wear a shirt to bike and run. Keep your helmet on until you put your bike back on the rack after you are done biking. Your bike must be WALKED OUT of and WALKED INTO the transition area. Talk to one of the many transition area volunteers if you need to know where you can mount your bike, and where you must dismount (get off your bike).

BIKE: Look over the bike course carefully. It follows the Meewasin trail towards Idylwyld Bridge to a marked junction Ëup the path to Spadina and Avenue C Ëalong Spadina back to the park entrance. Please slow down when nearing the park entrance. The course continues down hill past the tennis club Ëturns into the parking lot by the courts Ë joins up with the Meewasin trail. On your LAST LOOP, stay on the road to the parking area and follow the cones to the bike dismount area. You must bike on the right hand side of the trail except when passing. You will be disqualified if you block others from passing. Volunteers (or your parent) can help count the laps for you – but you need to count as well.

RUN: Run course starts next to the bike mount/start line. The run course follows the Meewasin trail towards the City water treatment facility. Follow the trail to your turnaround point. The turnaround points are colour coded. There will be a volunteer there to help you.

DISTANCES
Born in swim bike run turnaround
1997/1998 50 m (1 lap) 1.8 km (1 lap) 0.5 k red
1995/1996 100 m (2 laps) 3.4 km (2 laps) 1.0 k blue
1993/1994 150 m (3 laps) 6.6 km (4 laps) 1.5 k black
1989 to1992 200 m (4 laps) 8.2 km (5 laps) 3.0 k green

TYKES AND TRIKES DUATHLON: This is for those patient little ones cheering on their older sibling. Enter kids 5 and under for this fun event. Bring along bikes, trikes, or anything on wheels - don’t forget a bike helmet! Parents/guardians will be expected to run with their tykes!

TEAM ENTRIES: You want to have some fun and do it as a team with your friends? You can enter as a team with one of two of your best friends. The distance depends on the kid doing the swim/bike/run portion. The Swimmer must tag the biker at pool transition. The biker puts the bike back on the rack and tags the runner. Remember, you MUST all have SAME team race number.

YOUTH PROVINCIAL QUALIFIER: Youth Provincial Qualifier bike and run courses are different from above – race course description will be provided during orientation. All participants registered in this event MUST attend orientation (date to be announced). For more information on this, call RossAnn at 227-9213.

The distances are as follows:
Born in swim bike run
1991/1992 300 m 14.5 km 3 k
1989/1990 500 m 14.5 km 4 k

PARENTS, to ensure safety, please stay outside of the transition areas behind the traffic cones (particularly along the path from the pool to the bikes). We have many volunteers to help your kids, if they need it. Parents of smaller kids (7 and under) can bike and run with your TriKid - but please, bike behind your TriKid and do not get in the way of other TriKids. Bikes are not allowed on the run course.

POOL PARTY

AFTER the RACE: Snacks and drinks will be available by the finish line - enjoy! Please, stay away from the bike dismount and transition area. Remember to cheer for others.

POOL PARTY: After the last swimmer has left the pool, the pool will be open for a POOL PARTY. To join in, you should be a participant, volunteer, or friends and parents with a POOL PARTY TICKET. The number of Lifeguards on duty is based on the number of people in the pool area, even if you are not swimming. So you must have a pool party ticket to enter the pool area. Pool party tickets will NOT be available for sale the morning of the race because Lifeguards must be arranged ahead of time and food must be purchased. You will need to present the pool party ticket to get your lunch. Parents, don’t forget your bathing suits!!

LUNCH, MEDALS, PICTURES, and PRIZES: Lunch will be served around 12:00 p.m. Please help serve and clean up, as those serving up lunch are parents and volunteers. Medals and pictures will take during this time. Prizes will be given out (TriKids, remember to put your name in for prizes). Pool party ends at 1:00 p.m.

BAD WEATHER: The race will take place regardless! Hope for a good one.
